Real Viking Problems — Real Fixes

The Viking Issues We See Most in NYC

Every Viking appliance has a handful of well-known failure points. Here's what our technicians diagnose most often — and exactly how we fix it.

Viking Professional oven won't ignite or takes 10+ minutes

Why it happens: Weak glow-bar igniter no longer pulling enough current to open the gas safety valve — the classic Viking Professional VGSC/VGIC failure.

How we fix it: We replace the OEM Viking igniter (not aftermarket — Viking's safety valves are sensitive to current draw) and verify ignition within 60 seconds.

Viking range door falls open / won't stay shut

Why it happens: Broken oven door springs or a stretched door cable on Professional and Tuscany ranges after years of self-clean cycles.

How we fix it: We replace both door springs as a set (never one) and re-tension the door cable so the door closes firmly and stays open at 90°.

Viking sealed burner too high on simmer

Why it happens: Simmer plate missing or the low-flame orifice partially clogged with debris.

How we fix it: We clean the low-flame orifice, install the correct simmer plate for that BTU rating and adjust the simmer flame to a stable low blue flame.

Viking built-in refrigerator not cooling

Why it happens: Dirty condenser (mounted at the top), failed evaporator fan or a stuck defrost timer on VCBB/VCSB built-ins.

How we fix it: We vacuum the top-mount condenser, replace the evap fan or defrost timer and confirm the compartment reaches 37°F within 4 hours.

Viking dishwasher not draining / F1 error

Why it happens: Clogged drain pump, failed drain solenoid or a torn sump gasket allowing water to trip the leak sensor.

How we fix it: We clear the sump, replace the drain pump if seized and reseat or swap the sump gasket.

Viking Repair Tips

Pro Tips From Our Viking Technicians

Preventative maintenance, error-code shortcuts, and hard-won lessons from every Viking appliance our factory-trained team has serviced in NYC.

1

Never use aftermarket igniters in a Viking

Viking's gas safety valve is calibrated to a specific igniter current draw. Aftermarket igniters often fail to open the valve — the oven appears to work briefly, then quits. Always use OEM Viking igniters.

  • OEM part numbers start with PA010
  • Aftermarket parts may void safety-valve function
  • A weak igniter is the #1 Viking oven complaint
  • Ignition should complete within 60 seconds
2

Replace door springs in pairs

Viking range doors use two springs; when one stretches the other is close behind. Replacing only one causes the door to hang unevenly and stresses the second spring.

3

Clean the sealed-burner ports monthly

Viking's brass burners produce a distinctive blue flame only when the ports are clear. A yellow, weak or hissing flame usually means a clogged port — clear with a straightened paperclip, never a toothpick that could break off.

4

Vacuum the built-in fridge condenser

Viking built-in refrigerators (VCBB/VCSB) have a top-mounted condenser that clogs the same way Sub-Zero's does. Every 6 months, remove the top grille and vacuum the coils.
