Walk this diagnostic in order
Ice makers fail in a predictable sequence. Stop at the first symptom that matches yours.
- No water entering the mold — check the saddle valve and the inlet solenoid (most common in homes under 5 years old).
- Water enters but never freezes — freezer is above 10°F; verify door seal and temperature setpoint first.
- Ice forms but doesn't eject — failed harvest motor or thermostat, requires module replacement.
- Cubes are small or hollow — low inlet pressure, often a clogged inline water filter.
When to replace vs. repair
On Sub-Zero and Thermador built-ins, the ice module is a sealed assembly. If the harvest motor has failed, replacing the full module is usually more economical than rebuilding it and carries a full warranty.
